By 1964 four railway enthusiasts could no longer stand to see one local railway (branch line) after the other been taken out of service and scrapped. They founded the Deutscher Eisenbahn-Verein e.V. (DEV), inspired by the idea to preserve such a branch line as an outdoor museum railway.
